Help From United States, Atiku’s Visa Trouble

Nigeria News takes a look at the noise about US visa for Atiku Abubakar.

I get irritated that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar is seriously seeking a visa to travel to the United States.

And rhetorically, I ask what for? Must Atiku visit the US to become Nigerian president or get the endorsement of President Donald Trump to win the 2019 presidential election?

Yes, there was a case of Halliburton bribery scandal, involving Atiku and a US Congressman William Jefferson, which of course had long sunk the lawmaker. Jefferson was jailed.

The US Embassy in Nigeria has kept Atiku’s visa denial as a private issue until the former Vice President signified his intention for the presidential seat.

The noise became louder when Atiku emerged as the PDP flag bearer in Port Harcourt Rivers State a few months ago. Social commentators quickly reminded the public that PDP had only elected a candidate that could not travel to the US.

Atiku never denied that the embassy denied him of a visa, he could not just state why even when the US government had never indicted him of any criminal or civil offence.

The spokesman of the US Consulate in Lagos, Russell Brooks said that the issue of visa is confidential, which of course means that the embassy must have given the visa to Atiku eventually, judging by recent findings that the PDP candidate may be travelling to the US from the United Kingdom.

It was gathered that Atiku left for the United Kingdom a few days ago and would be travelling to the US for a meeting with some of his supporters in the diaspora.

It was also gathered that Former President Olusegun Obasanjo contributed immensely to the issuance of Visa to Atiku by the US government.

This new move, of course, will silent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress who have always taunted Atiku as a criminal.

Perhaps, the US government can influence Nigeria election, it is possible, judging by the recent book by former President Goodluck Jonathan, “My transition Hour”.

Jonathan narrated in his book how former President Barrack Obama of the US influenced the election of President Muhammadu Buhari by frustrating his (Jonathan) move to fight Boko Haram insurgents.

Recalled that Obama refused to sell ammunition to Jonathan government during the time the Boko Haram was an infant.

That possibly may be the reason why Atiku and by extension, PDP is out to seek help from the US and by extension President Donald Trump, whose body language is not in total support of Buhari’s government.

The Federal Government recent romance with China is not likely to favour the US. The US will definitely prefer a new president in Nigeria to fortify its economic ties and deflate the Chinese interest in the continent most buoyant economy.

So, granting Atiku a US visa is not just to erase his alleged sins but the US is trying to play safely in case the former President finds himself at the Aso Rock comes 2019.

To the US government, Buhari has betrayed the trust it reposed in him by allowing the Chinese to take a larger percentage of Nigeria’s economy instead of Europe and America.

Most of the infrastructure of roads and the rails being built by this administration are done in partnership with the Chinese companies and government.
