Osun Guber Poll: Who Wins At Extra Time
Nigeria News takes a look at the Osun governorship rerun and who may emerge the winner after extra time on Thursday.
By Thursday, a winner will emerge in Osun governorship election that began on Saturday. The rerun at seven units of Orolu, Ife North, Ife South and Osogbo Local Government Areas must definitely produce a clear winner, all things being equal.
All eyes are on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The Osun poll has put INEC under serious integrity test and this will define to a large extent what Nigerians should expect in 2019 general election.
Agreed, the INEC has not contravened any law by calling for a rerun in the peaceful but inconclusive election, most observers are of the views that a winner has already emerged on Saturday.
Many times in this country, elections have been rigged, using the law. I pray that this does not pass in Osun on Thursday.
There would not have been a rerun if the All Progressives Congress, APC had polled the highest votes on Saturday. However, the election results became a legal battle over a margin of 353 votes for the PDP.
For Senator Iyiola Omisore, the Social Democratic Party, SDP candidate, the Osun governorship poll was credible. He commended those who voted for him and expressed satisfaction despite that it emerged third in the poll with 128, 049 votes.
Omisore who has since become the new bride, hosted the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki in his Ile-Ife country home on Monday. Saraki had visited Omisore to woo the Social Democratic Party, SDP for the Thursday rerun.
The PDP does not want to leave any stone unturned in its move to push out APC out of Osun. The party has put so many options on the table and one of it is going all out on Thursday to win the rerun. To ensure victory, Saraki must lure back Omisore into the PDP fold.
Omisore is yet to make an official pronouncement as to whether he would give his support to PDP, his body language suggests that he will fly with the PDP on Thursday.
The All Progressives Congress won three out of the four local government areas where there were issues but the challenge is that the rerun will only take place in seven units.
The outgoing governor, Rauf Aregbesola became the state governor through the judicial power. As a matter of fact, the results of almost half of the local government areas of Osun State were cancelled by the Appeal Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Aregbesola was pronounced the winner.
Aregbesola took over from Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola towards the end of his second term in office. As it stands now, the PDP is bent on using all options to claim victory in Osun as the party has headed to court to challenge the legality of the declaration of the Saturday poll inconclusive.
In this extra time, it will take ingenuity of either of the two parties to emerge victorious on Thursday. The APC has been silent while the PDP has taken drastic steps to clinch Osun.
