Osun Inconclusive Guber Poll; SDP As New Bride
Nigeria News takes a look at the inconclusive governorship election in Osun State and the role the SDP may play in the rerun.
If the Social Democratic Party, SDP has not fielded a candidate for the Saturday governorship election in Osun State, perhaps the All Progressives Congress, APC would have said a goodbye to the governor’s seat by now.
In other words, the Peoples Democratic Party would have won clear and fair without a call for a rerun that will now take place on Thursday in four local government areas of the state.
The Peoples Democratic Party polled 254, 698 votes as against the All Progressives Congress that polled 254, 345 votes, while SDP polled 128, 049 votes. It was obvious that those who voted for SDP never wanted APC and would have voted for PDP.
However, one would have expected the Independent National Electoral Commission to declare the PDP and its candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke winner of the election but for a protest over the results of the Ayedaade Local Government.
The PDP agent had alleged that a thousand votes were cancelled by the INEC officer in Aiyedade, making Adeleke to kick against the results. And after hours of delay, the INEC reluctantly announced the results but with some skirmishes at some polling units in Orolu, Ife South, Ife North and Oshogbo Local Government Areas.
It was gathered that 942 votes were cancelled in Orolu; 547 in Ife South; 337 in Ife North and 884 votes in Osogbo Local Governments. In all, 3,498 votes were cancelled in Saturday election, which were far more than the difference between the PDP, APC votes, put at 353.
According to the INEC National Commissioner, voters education, Solomon Adeyemo Soyembi, because the margin between the two leading parties is less than the cancelled votes, it becomes imperative that a rerun is conducted in the local governments where issues of malfunction card readers and malpractices had happened.
In this rerun, it means all the political parties that have candidates will participate, including the SDP. It is going to be money spinning and it is expected that the SDP will definitely sell its voters to PDP to push out APC from Osun.
Osogbo is the stronghold of APC with 23, 379 votes where PDP polled 14, 499 votes. Orolu is PDP stronghold while APC could still win in Ife North and Ife South, where SDP still commands some votes.
INEC explains that the total number of votes cancelled is sufficient to produce a clear winner between the PDP candidate Ademola Adeleke and the APC candidate Gboyega Oyetola on Thursday.
What makes the election inconclusive is the biggest number of votes cancelled, according to INEC. It is not that the commission refused to take a decision on the results of Saturday by not declaring the winner but it has to follow due process for fair play.
On Ayedaade, INEC said there was no problem in the local government and would not include it in the rerun despite allegation by the PDP agent that 1000 of its votes were not counted.
