The Fight Against Corruption And The Growth of Poverty

Nigeria News takes a look at the fight against corruption by the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the resultant effect of poverty.

It was not unexpected that Nigeria would overtake India as the nation with the poorest people, judging by the hardship the citizens had faced in the last three years.

The cost of living has grown, Nigerians lose Jobs daily and for those who still have jobs, they are underemployed with meagre wages.

Poverty steadily crawls in as government fights corruption in the land. The pathetic level of poverty suggests that the masses had been living on the proceeds of corruption.

And now that the current government of President Muhammadu Buhari is fighting corruption as it has made us believe, there is no doubt that many innocent Nigerians are feeling the pain more than those at the corridors of power.

Nigerians voted the All Progressives Congress-led government with the hope that President Buhari would fish out corrupt public and private officials within the polity, irrespective of their party affiliations and prosecute them to serve as a deterrent to others.

However, the fight against corruption as it is today looks like a one-sided affair. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had revealed severally that its job is to hack down the enemies of the president.

Buhari’s public rating is falling every day. The masses want a leader that will not only fight corruption but the one that can provide Jobs and reduce poverty.

To most people, the real problem facing Nigeria is corruption but after about four years, those who pushed the past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan out are singing another song.

As the popular Muslim Cleric, Abubakar Gumi put it, Nigerians now want somebody who can eradicate poverty.

Of course, corruption should be fought, it must not increase poverty. And that is why the government must look inward and rejig its economic policy to favour job creation and provide an enabling environment for foreign and local investments.

This has been lacking and it makes Buhari’s efforts in fighting corruption a theoretical exercise.

A debate about corruption fight is becoming boring to many Nigerians who had earlier thought that the current government would turn things around for them within a short time.

As the scripture puts it, “shall we continue in sin and expect grace to abound, God forbids.”

With the bad economic situation, many Nigerians, mostly those whose businesses had crumbled do not see the fight against corruption as real but an instrument of revenge against the friends of past government.

To them, the government is not really dealing with the corrupt sinners in its circle and that is why the grace for economic prosperity has refused to come.

To, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria needs a leader that has the capacity to solve the economic problem and that is why he may be supporting his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku, no doubt is a successful businessman who may bring his knowledge on board if elected as Nigeria president but will he be able to fight corruption?
