Where Does The Power Shift After 2023?

Nigeria News takes a look at the direction of power after 2023 and those that are scheming to realise their ambition then.

The North holds the sway, whichever way it swings in 2019 between President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The two northerners represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively at the coming presidential election. One of them will definitely emerge as Nigerian president.

But, after 2019, the race of who becomes Nigeria President in 2023 will begin. That is the way of politicians, they think of the next election.

The three major political regions of the North, the Southwest and the Southeast have always laid claim to the presidential seat, even though the Igbo ethnic nationality had not been able to clinch the seat since 1999 that democracy returned to the country.

Some political elites of Igbos extraction are of the view that 2023 should be the turn of the Southeast to become President.

That is one of the reasons the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has endured the shenanigans in the All Progressives Congress in the last few months.

The governor has said it severally that the election of Buhari for the second term would open the way for a southeasterner in APC to contest the presidential seat in 2023.

Of course, this is by his own calculation. It is not the calculation of the APC.

As it is, there are strong indications that the former Governor of Lagos State and the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is nursing the ambition of running for the presidential position in 2023.

The Lagos big boss is preparing himself for this and that is why he is giving all his supports to Buhari.

Having known that the election of Atiku of PDP would jeopardise his chance, Tinubu is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure a successful outing for President Buhari.

Perhaps, he has entered an arrangement with the president and his inner caucus on this, judging by the body language of the cabals that surround Mr President.

A few days ago, the former Lagos State Governor, and the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola said that the return of Buhari for the second term will shift power to the southwest in 2023.

Fashola always picks his words and this latest statement of the minister is a confirmation that the present political calculation is a plot for the future. It goes beyond next year.

On other hands, the election of Atiku would definitely kill the agenda of both the Yorubas of the southwest and Igbos of the Southeast in that the Fulani man will definitely seek a comeback in 2023.

At present, Atiku’s running mate is an Igbo man, Peter Obi who would love to retain his position in the political Arithmetic. The implication of this is that the Igbo presidency is a mirage not yet a reality in 2023.

And for the Yoruba nation, the emergence of Buhari may not necessarily seal a presidential ticket for the southwest, it may throw up a new card in Nigeria democratic game.
