Without Buhari, Where Is APC?
Nigeria News takes a look at President Muhammadu Buhari, APC and the crisis within the party
President Muhammadu Buhari has taken over the peacemaking job in the crisis-riddled All Progressives Congress. He has realized now that his failure to do so may jeopardise his second term chance.
Before now, the president appointed the national leader of the party and the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to play that role but it never worked.
The Tinubu-led peacemaking team could not resolve the grievances of many of the members that had since defected to the Peoples Democratic Party and others.
There was nothing Tinubu could have done because he was once a victim of what the aggrieved members were asking for. Instead of listening to him, many of the aggrieved members alleged Tinubu of conspiracy and that he was using the opportunity to sell his 2023 presidential ambition.
Many members left APC not because they hate Buhari but because they did not like the friends of Mr President.
From their words, those who quit APC for other political parties believe that they cannot function well in a system in which members have been cowed by cabals. They saw themselves to be too alien to a party they co-founded.
One had thought that Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central would not quit APC because of his closeness with President Buhari, the lawmaker made a surprise move when he crossed to the PRP last week.
He described PRP as a party of the progressives and that he had only gone back home, to the political platform of his father. To him, it becomes necessary to leave APC because the terminal period of the party is predictable. “It begins and ends with Buhari,” Sani noted.
He explained that APC could not last beyond the political lifespan of President Buhari and that he would be doing himself and the people he represents a great disservice to remain in APC.
APC has become a home of confusion in recent time, the National Working Committee of the party is at loggerheads with some of the state governors on the platform of the party. The National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had been facing accusation and counter-accusations with many of the members.
Oshiomhole had alleged some of the governors of planning to unseat him. The party NWC’s idea of direct primary actually sank the party in a deeper crisis.
Except something is done urgently, this home of confusion may ruin the chance of Buhari in the 2019 general election. And to abate this, President Buhari has been engaging some of the aggrieved members, mostly the governors and senators who could not win in the primaries to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign.
How would one describe a governor who is ready to work for Buhari but vowed not to campaign for the gubernatorial candidate of his party in his state? Such is happening in some of the states, including Ogun, Oyo and Ondo states.
