Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council: Ministerial or Compensation List

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial appointees and what qualified them.

The Senate began the screening of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial appointees on Wednesday.

As usual, it was the “Paddy Paddy” screening where the nominees were asked to take a bow and leave.” No probing question. It is a family.

The 43 nominees have no portfolios for now and so the Senate have to narrow down their questions to the resume of the impending ministers but not their competence on the tasks ahead.

About 15 former ministers could not make the fresh list, which means that the only difference that can happen now is swapping of portfolios.

One appointment that I love so much is that of Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora. He is a quality Nigeria and former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Mamora has been a good example of a party man. His type is about service, not the benefits he would gain from it.

He has been denied so many times to serve because of his uncompromising character, yet he remains faithful to the course of the All Progressives Congress.

However, the inclusion of former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva whose past was laced with corruption, election rigging, and thuggery is a minus to a president who prides himself as a symbol of integrity.

In Osun, the former Governor, Rauf Aregbesola snatched the ministerial slot from the former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole.

One is eagerly waiting to see Aregbesola’s portfolio. He delivered Osun to APC during the presidential and gubernatorial elections. It looks as if he is being compensated for his performance in Buhari’s election.

Becoming a minister should be a responsibility but it has turned out to be a compensation for party members. The list is not different from the APC campaign team.

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson has urged the Senators from the State to give support to Sylva whenever he appears before the Senate for screening despite that they do not belong to the same political party.

Dickson went further to congratulate Sylva for being nominated as a minister.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu relocated to Abuja prior to the release of the list.

I fingered his hands in the list. As a matter of fact, Gbemisola Saraki from Ilorin, Kwara State, and Mamora were in Tinubu’s Abuja residence on Thursday on a thank you visit.

Gbemisola lost out in her election to the Senate and had since been compensated with a ministerial appointment.

In Ekiti, the former Governor, Otunba Niyi Adebayo is on the list. He is from the same local government with Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. Adebayo also has one of his siblings as commissioner in Ekiti State.

The list of ministers is a recycling process of men that lack fresh ideas. Besides Minister of Sports, Solomon Lalung and a score of others that Buhari dropped on this list, there are many others that have no business being members of the Federal Executive Council.

Surprisingly, Senator George Akume who told President Muhammadu Buhari that the killing of innocent people in Benue State by herdsmen last year was a fake news made the ministerial list.

His statement just won him a ministerial/compensation list.
