“Nine Persons Died In Anambra Cult Clash”
Rival cult groups turned Awka, Anambra State to the battlefield on Sunday, killing nine persons in a fresh clash.
A source told our correspondent that the clash was the fallout of the state’s annual cultural festival, known as ‘Imo Awka’ in which the cult members had threatened to attack themselves about two weeks ago.
The source said, “The reasons for the cult killing and counter-killings were not immediately ascertained but lifeless bodies of people alleged to be cult members litre different quarters in Awka eliciting tears from families of victims.”
He said that three persons were killed around Nkwelle Awka, four were killed around Eke Awka while one was killed around Regina Caeli Hospital Awka.
Speaking on the genesis of the clash, the source said that two cultists fought during the Imo Awka festival at Isiagu junction but they were separated. “They threatened to continue the clash wherever they meet again.”
The police in the state confirmed the incident, saying that those involved in the killing would be brought to book.
A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Haruna Mohammed read in part, “The Command has embarked on an aggressive manhunt for the perpetrators of these dastardly acts following actionable intelligence received about their hideouts.
Meanwhile, no fewer than 11 suspected members of the rival cults had been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
