NNPC Replies Kachikwu, Says Minister Lied
Barely two weeks that Minister of State For Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu’s petition to President Muhammadu Buhari was leaked, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC has responded.
The minister had written a petition accusing the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru of insubordination and illegal award of contracts without approval.
On Monday in a statement signed by NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division Mr Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation stated that Kachikwu had lied and concocted contract figures to get public sympathy.
The statement read, “Apart from the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano(AKK) pipeline project and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, production service contracts, mentioned by Kachikwu in his petition were not procurement contracts.”
The statement noted that the NNPC contracts do not require any review with the minister of state or the board of NNPC, according to law and rules that guide the corporation.
It said that the only thing that is required for the approval and processing of NNPC contract is the NNPC Tenders Board, the Minister of Petroleum Resources that is President Buhari who is the Chief Executive and/or Federal Executive Council (FEC), as the case may be.
“There are therefore situations where all that is required is the approval of the NNPC Tenders Board while, in other cases, based on the threshold, the award must be submitted for presidential approval.
