Offa Bank Robbery: A Plot Or Probe By Police To Nail Saraki?

By  |

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki earlier raised the alarm about the plot by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to robe him in the cult case in Ilorin Kwara State.

The Senate had to inaugurate an ad-hoc committee to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari over the matter. It looked like a dead issue until Sunday when the Nigeria Police addressed the press, inviting Saraki for interrogation over the Offa bank robbery.

The accusation had sharply shifted from cult case to armed robbery. It was gathered that one of the suspects confessed that he was one of Saraki’s political thugs.

When asked by journalists if he was sent by Saraki and the Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed to rob and kill in Offa, the suspect said no. But because he claimed to be their thugs, the police have the right to investigate.

However, making the invitation to the Senate President public, the police, I believe, is unnecessarily playing to the gallery and it’s obvious that reputable institution has now been politicised.

Why should the police issue a press statement on an invitation? Ordinarily they would have conducted investigations and then made it public when a suspect is to be charged to court.

But here, the police are jumping the gun, obviously to embarrass Saraki, who heads another institution that is having a running battle with the IGP.

While I don’t trust any politician and not holding a brief for Saraki, I know for a fact that most politicians use thugs for the campaign, some even have them on their payroll.

I do not think anyone will truly believe that Saraki has a robbery gang when the risk he will take in ‘robbing’ through the pen is far lesser than using guns.

Saraki for sure will have thugs working for him like other politicians, including the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, his predecessor, Ibikunle Amosun, former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and his successor Nyesom Wike and many others.

We know they all have thugs, we all witnessed the Ali Modu Sheriff saga and how his thugs turned to what is today known as Boko Haram.

If a politician empowers thug as they usually do during electioneering campaign, and the thugs later chose to become armed robbers, how is it his business?

Orji Uzor Kalu even alluded publicly to the fact that people used to die during PDP convention. That shows how much thuggery had been entrenched in our political system.

While waiting for the outcome of the investigation, one should tarry not to judge or trust any politician. I believe that the truth will prevail.

No one is above the law but that doesn’t make Saraki guilty and does not make police the saint in this matter.

The law presumes him innocent until proven guilty and so pronounced by a court of competent jurisdiction.

However, I see politics in all this.
