Oshiomhole, Nabena And The Future of APC
Nigeria News takes a look at the APC information and publicity management personality then and now.
Truth be told, the information management and publicity of the All Progressives Congress, APC is poor at present. The National Chairman of the party, Mr Adams Oshiomhole and the party Acting Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena are not getting it right at present, perhaps because they met on the ground internal crisis that needed an urgent solution.
For Nabena, his case is understandable. There is no record that he had been a man of the letter. He has been in the maritime business as a qualified Master of Business Administration. The defection of the former party National Publicity, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP opened a big vacuum for the party to fill.
There is no doubt that Nabena cannot fit into the shoes thrown away by Abdullahi who was a seasoned journalist and columnist of high repute with one of the widely read newspapers in Nigeria, This Day for years.
Abdullahi became the Kwara State Commissioner for Science and Education. He later worked as the Minister of Sports, Youths and Social Development under ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.
In all, Abdullahi excelled before becoming the APC National Publicity Secretary. His type is rare. Nabena has been misfiring just like his boss Oshiomhole in the last few weeks of defections. His words could easily be charged for libel and innuendoes.
Nabena lacks the journalistic and legal languages to do well in this sensitive position and it is better the party realizes this quickly and find a substantive spokesperson before the 2019 election.
Besides, the persona and the loudness of Oshiomhole have overshadowed the uninformed Nabena who has suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar terrain.
Nabena has failed to learn from Abdullahi. He should begin to pay more attention to the language of his opponent now to know how to address the issue so that he does not rock the boat of the APC.
Let us take a look at Yussuph Olaniyonu, the spokesman of the Senate President Bukola Saraki, he is highly cerebral. One could see the mental power in his press statement any day. Yes, he was a journalist and now a lawyer.
This is what the APC must do now to keep the party, which is gradually looking stronger again after series of defections and the recent victories in the by-election in about three states, including Bauchi and Kaduna States.
For Oshiomhole, his garrulous ways of doing things may be the undoing for APC. Having governed a state, one would expect Oshiomhole to exhibit a high level of decorum in his dealings with party members, some of whom were also former governors and senators.
Oshiomhole’s recent attack on the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige was uncalled for. Oshiomhole, a former union leader is supposed to have liaised with Ngige privately before coming outside to castigate the minister.
The APC National Chairman will need to be more decorous in his approach so that he does not turn the members to his personal enemies. This must be done quickly because APC’s quality publicity is more needed at this time.
