PDP’s Latest Dance In Osun
Nigeria News takes a look at the new dance step in Osun as Tribuna declared Senator Adeleke, winner of the gubernatorial election.
Despite the creation of Osun out of the old Oyo State, the two states have refused to go their separate ways when it comes to politics.
For years now, the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso is being managed by both states.
The university employs the residents of Osun and Oyo and gives them priority on students admission. The governors of the two states are the visitors of the institution till date.
Two third of the residents of Osun are Oyo by nature. Oyos are known for their grains of wit. I learnt that when you abuse an Oyo man, he pretends as if he does not hear but his reaction afterwards will show you how foolish you have been.
When the last Osun State governorship election was going in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke last year November, I saw the same trend happening in Oyo State.
Before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared it inconclusive, I concluded that Oyo election would not be different.
The Old Oyo was the political theatre of the old western region.
However, what happened in Osun was not allowed to happen in Oyo where Seyi Makinde of the PDP won fair and square and created no room for a supplementary poll.
Of course, the Osun PDP contested the election of the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Gboyega Oyetola at the election tribunal, which eventually read a judgment on Friday, declaring Adeleke as the winner of the election.
The tribunal described the rerun polls at the seven units in three local government areas of the state as illegal.
The judge said that the INEC presiding official had no right to cancel the elections in those areas where rerun eventually took place.
This verdict has since brought a new dance step to Osun. The PDP supporters stormed the streets to rejoice with Adeleke who recently lost his bid to the Senate.
Expectedly, the Senator wore his dancing shoes as he hailed the tribunal judgement.
But the state Governor, Oyetola quickly went on air to calm his supporters and the residents that his party had appealed the judgment and that he was sure to win at the appellate court.
He described the verdict by the tribunal as a split judgment, which has created lacuna for the
It will be recalled that the immediate past Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola got to power through the same judicial process.
His party, the Action Congress fought the then PDP Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola from the tribunal to the Supreme Court to claim back the stolen mandate by the PDP.
It is the turn of PDP now to get back its stolen mandate. The party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar described Friday’s judgement as victory for democracy.
Senator Ben Murray Bruce congratulated Adeleke but there is still a big hurdle to cross. The ruling APC will do anything to win at the appeal.
The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen would have been the right man to do justice in this situation but the ruling party played smartly on this.
Adeleke has been a special character even before he became a lawmaker. He was tagged a dancing Senator for his social escapade at the red chamber.
He has a clown friend, Senator Dino Melaye who is dubbed a singing senator. Melaye sings to make a
At the Senate, Melaye sings, Adeleke dances. As a Governor, if God wishes, the sociable lawmaker, Adeleke is expected to change his dance step.
