Politics and Economics of Buhari’s Independence Speech
ElevateNews takes a look at a paragraph in President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day Speech
“Revenue-generating agencies will come under much greater scrutiny, going forward, as the new performance management framework will reward exceptional revenue performance, while severe consequences will attend failures to achieve agreed revenue targets”.
This is an excerpt from President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day speech. This statement, reading between the lines is not only about revenue drive but highly political. The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler must be picking his personal belonging gradually now to leave that office.
His time is up to give way for a northerner that will fulfil the agenda of the cabal towards 2023 agenda. Fowler is the target not any other revenue making agency like the customs and immigration. Fowler is one of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s boys.
I only pray that the severe consequence of not meeting up with the target will not land Fowler in EFCC cell because he will be investigated if he fails to meet the target after jacking up the Value Added Tax from five per cent to seven per cent.
From today, there will be stiff competition and rush to generate more money among the revenue-generating agencies. TROUBLE!
This unfortunate statement from President Buhari’s Independence Day speech has tacitly given the FIRS and others, the go-ahead to squeeze more money out of people’s pockets. God save you if you land in the dragnets of the Fowler’s team, the FRSC, Customs, etc.
Many more people will run away from this country if they don’t want to die untimely, not because they have not been paying tax but because they are overburdened with double taxation, and they get no value for their money.
Despite the growing hardship, occasioned by some senseless policies and the incompetence of this administration, Buhari still wants to put more burden on the masses, yet there are no palliatives.
The president also said that he would beam his searchlight on cybercrime and hate speeches. This is an indirect warning to citizen journalism and bloggers. Critics of this government may end up at the custody of the Department of State Service, DSS.
The president has nothing to lose this time because he seeks no vote from anybody again. His body language suggests a military action against any Nigerian that will go against his policy.
The president speech failed to address the failed economic policy but emphasized on the consequence of not implementing some of the wrong policies to the letter.
The recent inauguration of an economic advisory council may have been a good step in the right direction, its workability will depend on the influence of the cabal that surround the president.
The mafia, according to findings actually frustrated Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s economic team for political reason and never allowed to work.
The social investment policy, which is the baby of Osinbajo has been ceded to a new ministry so as to make the vice president unpopular ahead of the 2023 election.
