Politics of Dapchi Girls: Where Buhari Misses It

Politics of Dapchi Girls: Where Buhari Misses It

Nigeria News takes a look at how APC rode on Chibok girls kidnap to push out the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and how the party is trying to stop the politicization of the Dapchi girls kidnap.

Every aspect of the Chibok girls kidnap was politicised. From Jonathan’s inept response to the public ridicule the wife, Patience was put to when she wept about the bloodshed in Maiduguri and other parts of the North-East. A video, which later went viral, was made about Patience, ridiculing Nigeria’s then-First Lady to no extent.

If it is true that President Muhammadu Buhari claimed the Dapchi girls kidnap should not be politicised, he missed it. One of the key factors that got him into office was the politicisation of the Chibok girls kidnap. Now that the shoe is on the other foot and he is feeling bad about it, he should act his office and end the reign of terror by both Boko Haram and the killer herdsmen.

If anyone was guilty of hate speech, it should be those of us on his side when Jonathan was in office. The Office of Mr President and that of the First Lady were disparaged severally with several English Language versions popularised by the then opposition on behalf of Patience. It was a daily ritual.

Yes, hate speech is evil. But it is not in the context being promoted by today’s Presidency. Criticisms of ineptitude are not the hate speech. Hate speech, as we know it is in the context of the Hutus and Tutsis of old in Rwanda. And the Northern Islamic cleric, who recently confirmed a letter was sent to Buhari by his people to preserve the leadership of the country in Muslim hands certainly made a hate speech.

He sought to set Nigeria’s security forces against one another, asking Muslims among them to maintain the status quo. That is the position of Boko Haram too. They want a Theocracy in a secular Nigeria. Of course, we know it is Ziggy of the highest order. Some Muslims are equal than the others. Bashorun MKO Abiola was a Muslim. Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was a Muslim but yet they were killed in broad daylight by those who claimed to be more Muslim.

Mr President should act his office by doing the needful. That is why we voted him into office. Any attempt to go after the opposition in the name of politicising the kidnap of students or hate speech will surely backfire. Quality performance of his job is what the country needs. Without an opposition in a democracy, it is another Abacha rule Nigeria will be led into.

Unfortunately, Nigeria of today is different. It is a country of democracy where freedom of speech must be allowed.

However, when it becomes a crime to criticize absurdity and government now see every statement against activities of herdsmen and the alleged complicity of the armed forces as hate speech, then there is more to the problem in Nigeria.

The All Progressives Congress would be the first opposition party to kick out the ruling party in Nigeria and it rode conveniently on hate speeches to get the power.

As a matter of fact, former President Goodluck Jonathan described himself as the most abused president Nigeria ever had. I could remember that he was described by former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode as a president with balls.

Almost all the grammatical gaffes by Patience Jonathan went viral online and yet the administration never sued a single person for hate speech.

President Muhammadu Buhari must learn out to tolerate now that he is seeking the second term in office and must know that Nigeria is no more a military state.
