Produce Kanu Now, FG Tells Sen. Abaribe
The Federal Government has called on Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to produce the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
In an affidavit filed before the Federal High Court Abuja, the Federal Government opposed the earlier affidavit filed by Abaribe seeking to withdraw as the surety for Kanu.
The government said that Abaribe’s application to withdraw is belated, alleging that Kanu is in the custody of the senator and must produce him.
According to the counter-affidavit, Abaribe was aware that Kanu “has long violated the bail conditions handed down by this honourable court” on April 24, 2017, before September 11 when he claimed to have lost contact with the defendant.
The counter-affidavit said that the surety ought to have applied to withdraw since he noticed that Kanu had breached all his bail conditions but waited until the IPOB leader disappeared.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr Shuaibu Labaran, argued in the written address that Abaribe “failed woefully” by allegedly aiding and abetting Kanu to flout his bail conditions.
Abaribe had earlier claimed frustration in his application but Labaran said that the senator failed woefully to have been seeking withdrawal, adding that the trial must continue.
There were claims that Kanu was in the custody of the Nigerian Army but the Defence Headquarters had since denied that.
