Rotimi Adeyemi Shot To Death, Kunle Olonade Mobbed To Death – Story of LASTMA And FSARS
Nigeria News takes a look at the circumstances that led to the killing of a LASTMA Official by the operative of FSARS.
He was described as a gentleman. Some of his colleagues said that Kunle Olonade, an operative of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad was a diligent police officer.
But on Wednesday he became a killer when he shot to death an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr Rotimi Adeyemi at Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State.
Olonade had driven against traffic along Iyana Ipaja and was apprehended by the LASTMA official for breaking the traffic rule.
Instead of complying with the traffic official, Olonade dashed into his car, brought out a gun and in a second ended Adeyemi’s life.
Passersby ran away from the scene but a mob of angry residents descended on Olonade who was not in a police uniform for a beating of his life.
It took the intervention of the Rapid Respond Squad before Olonade could be rescued from the hands of the angry mob.
Unfortunately, he could not survive the mob attack, Olonade gave up the ghost on his way to the hospital, according to the Lagos State Police Command.
An easy going police officer was mobbed to death because he lost his temper against a LASTMA official. According to an investigation, Olonade was returning from work just a few days that President Muhammadu Buhari approved new salary structure for the Nigeria Police.
This is a season Nigerians expect our policemen to be happy. A time when the police salary has just been increased. A time the government has refused to increase the minimum wage despite the protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the police salary was jacked up.
However, Olonade and the family he left behind will not benefit from this new salary.
While the Lagos State Government wanted a probe of what led to the killing of his staff, the Nigeria Police Force ordered a posthumous investigation into the crime committed by the dead police officer.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos Edgal Omohimi said that Olonade would be dismissed from the police service posthumously with all his ranks stripped.
A few months ago, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo ordered the reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad over various allegations of criminality against Nigerian citizens.
SARS operatives terrorized many parts of the country as they arbitrarily waylaid residents, mostly youths and students for alleged internet fraud.
As it is now, Adeyemi has been shot dead and Olonade mobbed to death. Both have left their children and wives abruptly.
For the LASTMA official, the Lagos State Government will definitely compensate the family, judging by the circumstances of his death. Adeyemi’s death has attracted public sympathy that will not make the government shy away from helping the family of the deceased.
But Olonade had added a bigger problem to the woes of his family. Having dented the image of the family, he is not going to benefit any entitlement.
The wife and children have nothing to live on as the police will soon begin to try him posthumously.
Police and LASTMA officers have always been at loggerheads in Lagos but the Wednesday crime was cruel in that Olonade shot Adeyemi at the head in broad daylight.
