Saint Buhari And His Self-Interest Politics

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the kind of politics President Muhammadu Buhari is playing and the probable consequence.

With the way things are going, it is becoming clearer that President Muhammadu Buhari will not be bothered if All Progressives Congress (APC) fails to win some states.

His current campaign is about him and it does not matter if Dapo Abiodun, the APC governorship candidate loses to Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement in Ogun State.

Buhari’s speech in Owerri, Imo State that the residents have the rights to choose their governor irrespective of the party is enough to define the anti-party activity of the President.

The slogan of “Vote for me” but vote your conscience in the gubernatorial election by Buhari is not fair at all for the APC and the party leadership who are fighting tooth and nail, stepping on toes to ensure success at the February 16 poll.

I begin to wonder if truly Buhari is principled. Our man of integrity has slipped in some areas that are making one to doubt his integrity.

As a former President Olusegun Obasanjo put it, Buhari’s integrity is fake and should not be banked on.

How do we measure the integrity of a man whose his own brand of politics is about his personal instead of collective success of all the candidates?

Buhari has simply exhibited the character of the former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola whom at a time refused to bankroll other candidates of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2011 election.

His predecessor and godfather, Tinubu had asked the governor to release funds for the election but Fashola turned it down, claiming that he could not use Lagos money to fund any candidate, including those from other states.

Fashola nearly paid with his second term agenda as the party rose against him, describing him as a selfish human being.

A group, the “Trueface” of Lagos came up then to challenge Fashola’s style of government with various allegations of financial misconducts. I do not envy whosoever has sold this idea of democracy to Buhati because it may boomerang.

The president has contributed to the political problem his regime has faced since he assumed office. His lack of passion to toe the party line whenever it matters most has given room to political prostitution among many of the APC members.

Buhari’s indifference to who became the President of the Senate and Speaker House of Representatives caused the APC the imbroglio, which it has not been able to solve.

The APC’s plan was to make Senator Ahmad Lawal the Senate President and Femi Gbajabiamila the Speaker, House of Reps but Bukola Saraki killed the move as he rode on his PDP friends to change APC plan. Buhari never saw anything wrong in it. To him, it was democracy in action until Saraki and Dogara began to plot his fall.

Today, both have gone back to their party, PDP. Buhari should know that there are scores of Sarakis and Yakubus who are just watching him now and his indifferent attitude to the party politics.

They will strike when it matters most and it will be devastating for APC to get out of the shock.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha does not hide this as he has promised to deliver for Buhari but not the APC gubernatorial candidate in Imo state.
