Senate Declares IG, Idris Persona Non-Grata
The Senate has resolved to write embassies, the international community, Nigeria’s international partners and the Interpol to derecognize the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris as it declared the police boss, “Persona non-grata on Wednesday.
The senate took the decision because Idris refused to appear before it for three consecutive times that he was summoned.
Speaking at the plenary, President of the senate condemned the attitude of Idris for shunning the senate at a time the country is battling insecurity and impunity.
However, in a swift response, Idris said he had no apology for shunning the Senate as it cautioned the lawmakers not to tarnish his image.
The Senate had invited the police boss to defend the growing rate of killings in some parts of the country and the inhuman treatment meted to one of its members, Senator Dino Melaye.
But the police IG refused to show up, rather he sent representatives, whom the Senate refused to question.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has chided the IGP for shunning the invitation by the Senate over rising cases of insecurity in the country.
The party described Idris’ conduct as shameful and disrespectful, noting that the hallowed chamber deserves the respect of all Nigerians regardless of their class and status.
