Shitte Leader, Zakzaky May lose Sight In Custody
Lagos lawyer, Mr Femi Falana has called on the Federal Government to release leader of the Islamic Movement, Shiite, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky from custody on health grounds.
Falana said that the Muslim cleric might lose sight of his right eye if he continued to stay in custody despite the order by the court to release him on bail.
Zakzaky has been incarcerated by the government for about two years, following a clash between his group and men of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna.
The clash led to the killings of about 300 civilians believed to be members of the Shiite, including two children of their leader, Zakzaky.
In a letter by Falana to President Muhammadu Buhari, the lawyer said that Zakzaky suffered an injury on his right eye during the fracas two years ago and might lose sight of the eye if not allowed to get treatment.
Now he risks losing the sight in his right eye “sequel to the brutal treatment meted out to him by the armed soldiers”, Falana wrote.
Falana said that he visited Zakzaky and his wife in a secret police detention in Abuja and found out their critical condition.
He said that the Department of State Service had continued to detain the Muslim leader and had refused him to remove some pellets of a gunshot in his body.
