Sowore’s Call And Arrest For Revolution
Nigeria News takes a look at the arrest of Mr. Omoyele Sowore by DDS for calling for revolution.
By calling for revolution, the Social Critic and Publisher of the online medium, Sahara Reporter, Mr. Omoyele Sowore may have been ignorantly and indirectly advocating for the forcible overthrow of a legitimate government or cause social order.
Sowore’s call for revolution made the headline on social media last week and became a trending issue on Twitter on Friday.
His home was consequently raided by the operatives of the Department of State Service while Sowore himself was arrested and taken first to DSS Lagos Office at Shangisha, then later to Abuja.
This is the latest about Sowore, a former student union leader who has been a thorn in the flesh of the present government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Having contested as the Presidential candidate of the Africa Action Congress but lost, Sowore has finally joined the list of agitators,
calling for revolution.
He actually said this during his visit to the Afrobeat music legend, Femi Kuti at the Afrika Shrine, Agidingbi that there was never an election in Nigeria and that only revolution could take the country out of its present quagmire.
But Sowore should have known that the outcome of the 2019 presidential election is a reflection of who Nigerian electorate are.
That the youths are only loud on social media, they are internet trolls that know little about Nigeria’s politics.
There have been divergent views on why the DSS should arrest Sowore but has refused to arrest leaders of the Miyetti Allah, the umbrella body of the Cattle Breeder Association of Nigeria who has been defending some of the criminal activities of Herdsmen in the land.
Another argument is why should the government proscribe the Shiite, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria but chose to dialogue with bandits?
Last week, the Government of Katsina State under Governor Aminu Masari granted amnesty to bandits but for Sowore, he is a threat to the existence of Nigeria because he called for revolution.
Sowore’s case looks like a solo effort of a man that is fanatical with his conviction. He is yet to form a particular organi
He only tags his campaign, “RevolutionNow” and within four days, despite that, he is yet to carry out the threat finds himself behind the bars.
The government may treat Sowore like the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu and Shiite leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky if care is not taken.
He may be in DSS custody for the next four years of this administration. It is possible Sowore may remain in the cell even if a court of competent jurisdiction grants him bail.
True, he has killed nobody as many of the herdsmen had done. Sowore has not caused any public disturbance or break the laws of the land but to this current government, Sowore’s call for revolution is seditious enough to cause public unrest.
Kanu is a fugitive, El-Zakzaky is in custody with their organi
The Amnesty International warned Nigerian Government of the implications of detaining Sowore, Senator Shehu Sani has condemned the arrest too as they called on the DSS to release the former AAC presidential candidate.
I hope that the government will not tag Sowore as a terrorist now that he has been arrested for calling for revolution.
