After the closure of the school due to a riot by the students of the institution, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), ratified the decision of its Senate to reopen the institution on Monday October 3, 2016.

The school resumed on the said day and all students of the institution including postgraduate students and those on Industrial Training (IT) and the Farm Practical Year (FPY), have been directed to pay a compulsory fee of N5,000 which is to cover for replacement of private and public property worth millions of naira destroyed during the students protest on August 18, 2016.

The protest by the students had to do with their displeasure of constant robbery attacks in which seven vehicles were burnt, a police post was also destroyed, a church, Divine Heights Bible Church, Abeokuta, was also vandalised amongst other things.

Mrs Emi Alawode, the Head of the Directorate of Public Relations (DPR), of the institution signed a statement that noted that the crisis was well investigated and involved 13 sittings by the committee which was set up to investigate it.

The fine was deemed worthy due to the fact that it was hard to finger those who were directly responsible for the destruction.

The statement also claimed that the President of the Students’ Union, Comrade Olusegun Nwenoye, said the union had no issues with the fee.
