The Sad Effects Of Okorocha’s Ministry of Happiness
Nigeria News take a look at the Ministry of Happiness and Couples’ Fulfillment created by Imo State Government.
Imo State Governor, Mr Rochas Okorocha has been a subject of ridicule in the recent times. Some of his policies and personae have been trending on social media platforms for negative reasons of course.
Okorocha has been enjoying too much freedom as a governor and at times, one begins to ask if Imo State has got a house of assembly to check the excesses of this administration.
It began with the arbitrary demolition of Owerri Market, where some marketers were forcefully ejected and injured in the process.
The residents staged a protest against the impunity of the state governor in addressing some issues but instead of listening to them, Okorocha was bent on carrying out all his regulations.
As the dust of protests by the residents subsided, Okorocha came with the idea of erecting statues of his mentors in Owerri.
He started with the statue of the South African President Jacob Zuma despite the questionable pasts and presents of the president. Zuma has over 100 cases in court, ranging from corruption to sexual assaults, yet Okorocha erected his statue against the wish of Imo residents.
Two weeks after he commissioned Zuma’s statue, Okorocha invited the Liberian President, Ellen Sirleaf to Owerri where he commissioned another statue to honour her.
Investigation showed that the Imo State Government spent about N1 billion to erect the statues and commission them.
At present, Imo State Government owes its civil servants’ salary arrears and it will take the Paris Club Refund from the Federal Government to pay them.
As a matter of urgency, President Muhammadu Buhari said about a week ago that the only thing that would make him release the funds is if the state governments would pay their workers’ salaries before the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Interestingly, Okorocha was among the governors that represented the state governors in a meeting with Buhari, where they agreed to pay their workers from the Paris Club Refunds.
Be that as it may, the governor dazed Imo residents on Monday when he announced the appointment of his sister, Mrs Ogechi Ololo nee Okorocha, as the Commissioner for Happiness and Couples’ Fulfillment.
It sounds unbelievable but it is true. First, the new ministry sounds bizarre and appointing a sister who was his former Deputy Chief of Staff to head the ministry as a commissioner looks impugned.
Okorocha in the eyes of the public is taking the Imo people for a ride and nothing is being done to check this impunity. Okorocha’s administration will go down in history as one of the governments laced with impunity and abuse of power.
