Tinubu, Oshiomole, Oyegun And Matters Arising
Nigeria News takes a look at how the current National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomole will be able to relate with some of the party’s national leaders without rancour.
Something is still strange to me; that former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole has not stepped on Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s toes.
Right from his days as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, I see Oshiomole as an independent mind who will not easily compromise his principles.
Politics is about winning some and losing some but the kind of democracy that Nigerian politicians play suggests “a winner takes all” affair.
This was what the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun pretended to hate, which eventually created a frosty relationship between him and Tinubu.
Asiwaju Tinubu has the domineering tendency, which Oyegun would not allow. Of course, Oyegun ensured that Tinubu did not have his ways in some of the party’s decisions.
A very good example was the Ondo State governorship election in which Rotimi Akeredolu eventually emerged despite Tinubu’s contrary views.
Tinubu’s politics of imposition in Lagos had failed severally at the national level because the national officials would not agree with his ideas. Severally, Tinubu had been alienated but he remained unwavering with his logic until last Saturday that he saw off those who had gagged against him.
Oyegun is no more the national chairman of the party even though he would have loved to be. His tenure elongation’s strategy to perpetrate himself in office for one more year was struck out a few months before the party’s national convention.
As at today, the game has favoured Tinubu again because of the emergence of Oshiomole who happens to be one of his stooges.
Tinubu bankrolled Oshiomole’s election as the Governor of Edo State. For eight years that he governed the state, there were insinuations that Oshiomole had disagreements with Tinubu over the state’s Internally Generated Revenue.
It was gathered that Tinubu’s “AlphaBeta”, a financial outfit was introduced to Oshiomole to manage the Edo State IGR but the arrangement created serious disagreement between the two former governors.
However, the noise over the IGR, AlphaBeta, Tinubu and Oshiomole died down naturally as the two gladiators resolved their differences.
Unlike the former Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) who has not been able to mend the fence with his former boss, it appears that Oshiomole and Tinubu are getting on well.
Oshiomole is fearless and independent to many of his admirers, the former governor must have been doing something good in the secret to appease those who brought him to political limelight.
Does Oshiomole live a double life? This is another question that will bring answers in the next few months. As the chairman of the ruling party with the presidential election behind the door, Oshiomole’s hidden political shrewdness must definitely come up. Not as a governor now but as a torchbearer in the search for a common ground where party members will agree with his sense of duty and justice.
