Tinubu’s APC Reconciliation Committee: A Test Of Loyalty
Nigeria News takes a look at the new responsibility given to former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu by President Muhammadu Buhari and the implications.
President Muhammadu Buhari has just displayed a kind of native intelligence by designating Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to mend fences of the cracked All Progressives Congress, APC.
It is a well thought out idea and a decision that will not only help the president himself but will test the loyalty of Tinubu. There have been insinuations that Tinubu is fed up with Buhari’s style of governance but has been diplomatic about revealing his actual position.
Buhari’s allies cannot trust Tinubu but now that he will be leading the delegation to reconcile the aggrieved members of the party, they may have put the former Lagos State Governor in a serious dilemma.
It is becoming clearer that Buhari will be contesting for the second term, a situation that has set many APC members against themselves. Their personal ambition and interest are daily widening the crack in the party.
Either Buhari is just acting on an advice or taking a personal decision, designating Tinubu is a real test of loyalty.
Some APC members of the National Assembly are warming up to decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP so as to fulfil their political ambition.
They have been at loggerheads with their state governors over who contests for the senatorial seat in 2019.
Some senators know that their fate of returning to the National Assembly lies with their governors. They have prepared to cross to PDP that has promised them with an automatic ticket.
For instance in Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje is having it rough with his predecessor Rabiu Kwankwaso. This is one state Buhari must not lose in 2019. He got almost 2 million votes in Kano in 2015 and would be relying so much on the state to deliver in 2019.
Kwankwaso has presidential ambition. He is facing serious strife with Ganduje who is a strong supporter of Buhari.
Tinubu is very close to both of them and can easily settle the grievances but one is not sure the former Lagos governor will prevail on Kwankwaso to drop his presidential ambition.
In Oyo State, there is a crisis between Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s camp and that of the Minister of Communication, Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu.
Shittu is working assiduously to become Oyo State Governor. He is the convener of the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Group for the Southwest. But Shittu is not Ajimobi’s candidate and this has led to a serious crisis in Oyo. It is one of the problems Tinubu must solve to show his loyalty to Buhari.
In Kogi where Governor Yahaya Bello is another strong supporter of Buhari, there is a crisis among APC members.
Recalled that Bello was never Tinubu’s ally. He battled one of Tinubu’s boys, James Abiodun Faleke to become the state governor.
In Benue, APC is facing another crisis due to the recent killings by herdsmen, which has been politicized. Tinubu will have to visit Governor Samuel Ortom to persuade him why he must remain in APC despite pressure by his kinsmen to quit the party.
The people of Benue had vowed not to vote for APC, following the incessant killings of their children, wives and husbands by the herdsmen.
There are thousands of the party members that will be pitching their tents with the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who decamped to PDP to realise his presidential ambition. Tinubu would have to speak to this set too. It is a great task and a test of loyalty.
