“We Miss Ambode”, Lagos Residents Lament
ElevateNews takes a look at the performance of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and how Lagosians now feel about the immediate past governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.
This year downpour has not helped Lagos State Governor, Mr. Jide Sanwo-Olu. The rain has been heavy and it is exposing the shortcomings of the present administration as Lagosians now complain of missing the immediate past Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
The former Governor Ambode did not allow Lagosians to miss the previous Governor Babatunde Fashola because he hit the ground running with his own programme, some of which included light up Lagos and building of laybys to reduce vehicular traffic in the S
Ambode stopped the excesses of the Vehicle Inspectorate Office, VIO and empowered more the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority. Even at that, he ensured that the LASTMA was more civil with motorists.
Just as Fashola came in with the idea of beautification, converting under bridges to rehabilitation parks, Ambode showed that he had something to offer differently from Fashola. Of course, he did within four years and Lagosians appreciated him. They wanted him for the
In four months, Ambode showed the direction he would take but four months after Sanwo-Olu had been sworn-in, there is no indication of where and what will be his unique selling point. Except that his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile has been dishing out press statements to the media houses, nothing practical is on ground to hail the performance of Sanwo-Olu.
Perhaps he may become the second governor to spend one term if he is not impeached with the way things are going. Yes, Sanwo-Olu may think that he has the All Progressive Congress behind him but when Lagosians begin to complain about the
The rains have created so many geographical features on Lagos roads in the last few months. This has contributed to the heavy traffic and of course loss of man-hour in the metropolis.
I once asked one of his aides if the governor is waiting for the rain to subside before embarking on road repair. Expectedly, he said YES but his answer proved him wrong as the government rolled out machines on Monday to do some palliative works in Ijaye area of Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu should not wait until after the rain, or else he may face media condemnation in less than six months of assuming office. Lagos is so sophisticated and will need a proactive government at all times. That is why there is Public Work Corporation at Berger area of the State whose primary assignment is to fix bad roads both in the rain and in the dry season.
Could it be that Ambode had taken away all the money in Lagos, God forbid. Sanwo-Olu should not only make money but must increase the Internally Generated Revenue of the State so that more money would be spent on the capital projects.
