What Will Ambode’s Legacy Be?

What Will Ambode’s Legacy Be?

Nigeria News take a look at the performance of Lagos State Government and how far it will take him to succeed for the second term.

Perhaps the incumbent Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode may be the first that will not be reelected for the second term in office.

All past governors of the state had got the opportunity of second chance because of their good performance in the first term.

Since the days of Alhaji Lateef Jakande to Babatunde Raji Fashola, Lagos has always been in opposition to the Federal ruling party but the governors’ performance has always helped them to retain the seat.

Lagos is rich and the residents are sophisticated in terms of education, commerce and industry. It is in Lagos that electorate will love to see political candidates debating before going to the election proper.

As a governor in Lagos, you do not have an excuse not to perform.

However, the present governor has not done enough since he assumed office, despite that the state now enjoys federal support.

Ambode enjoys the support of the media even though there is little to show that he is working. The governor started with “Light Up Lagos”, a programme, many thought would change the face of Lagos, return nightlife and serve as a lasting legacy for Ambode.

However, in the last few months, the government had dropped the idea and now concentrated on building lay-bys at various and popular bus stops to ease traffic.

The “Greene” project started by the former Governor, Mr Fashola to beautify the state with trees and gardens had been thrown out. The gardens and parks are gradually turning to the hideouts of hoodlums.

Some of the flowers and trees have overgrown and in serious need of pruning. Some of the gardens, especially those along Iyana Oworo, Olowu and Ilubirin going to Obalende have become dump site.

Since Ambode cancelled Private Public Partnership, PPP idea of waste management created by Fashola, Lagos streets had since become dump site.

Refuse litters the road as residents wait endlessly for the new technology on waste management promised by Ambode.

Even the building of laybys has not done much on traffic control. Traffic has resurfaced on the Third Mainland Bridge in the last two months.

The governor is building mega parks to change the face of transportation in Lagos. He promised to ban yellow commercial buses and bring in the new set of vehicles to ply Lagos road, he is yet to accomplish this.

But Ambode will be remembered for many statues he built to immortalize some Nigerians that had contributed immensely to the development of the state in education, commerce and arts.

He received some knocks on this, especially on the new statue of the legendary politician, Chief Obafemi Awolowo at the junction of Lateef Jakande Road, Agidimgbi.

He will also be remembered for his role in organizing the Lagos Street Carnival. Here, the state governor ensures the congregation of music stars to usher in New Year.

The governor has been moving from one uncompleted assignment to another and with this, there is clear indication that he may not leave an astounding legacy like his predecessors.
