Where Is Tambuwa In All These Defections?
Nigeria News takes a look at the defections within the political parties, majorly, PDP and APC and the critical role of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State in it.
The defection of some APC senators and members of House of Representatives on Tuesday was expected. A similar thing happened before the 2015 presidential election.
Like the treachery of the speaker of the 7th National Assembly, and a PDP member, Hon. Aminu Tambuwwal, the two leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives, Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara have just done the same.
They have announced the names of defectors, excluding themselves and gave APC lawmakers to the PDP just as Tambuwal of PDP gave the All Progressives Congress the leeway at the 2015 presidential elections in spite of the Senate President, David Mark’s allegiance to the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, at the time.
Tambuwal actually wanted to contest against Buhari in 2015 presidential election but he was prevailed upon with gubernatorial ticket for Sokoto.
It must also be noted that Tambuwal’s role within the APC frustrated the effort of the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu group in enthroning Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the 8th Assembly Speaker in 2015.
The same treachery birthed the seat of the Senate presidency with Bukola Saraki’s emergence against the favoured candidate, Senator Ahmad Lawan of the same APC in 2015.
Three years on, the centre is yet to hold due to battles of supremacy by different affiliates of the groups within the APC.
Unfortunately, the lucky president who benefitted from the Saraki/Tambuwwal scheming forgot a Yoruba proverb that says ‘The death that killed a chicken rearer must not kill a goat herder’. He (Buhari) chose to look the other way saying he was ready to work with anybody… a tactless/naive move that became monumental.
From that time till 2017, President Buhari has fought for his life. In the second half of his four-year term, the members of National Assembly has also fought for recognition and financial freedom to no avail.
Tambuwal is still a member of APC so is Saraki. Both have not defected as expected, even when their recent fraternity with the PDP has become so elaborate to suspect where they really belong.
In all the brouhaha, Tambuwal has been so silent, operating so delicately underneath to make more cracks in the APC just for personal gains.
Yakubu Dogara has been working with both political heavyweights but with some sense of decorum. He is watching from afar where and how the pendulum swings to decide his future.
What happened at the National Assembly on Tuesday could have gone the other way round if Saraki had not been smart enough to read out the defectors and call for a 30 minutes break after the defection.
The plan was to actually impeach the Senate president and elect the Senate leader, Ahmad Lawan. But the Waziri of Ilorin knew the game plan as he deflated the number of APC members who wanted him out. Saraki came up with a list of defectors to make APC the minority party.
In all of these, a hidden power, Tambuwal did a lot of jobs, according to findings to make Saraki, Dogara remain as they are for now.
