Why Buhari Should Read Obasanjo’s Letter

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at the latest letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jokingly I have written on my Facebook Wall, asking former President Olusegun Obasanjo to channel his message to President Muhammadu Buhari through a radio program in ‘Fulfulde’ Language.

My sense of humour was not to make a mockery of the president or insult the former president’s letter writing skills but to reduce the tension the insecurity in Nigeria had created for the citizens.

But what followed my views was a barrage of attacks by some of my colleagues who had become close followers of Buhari and would not want any comment against him. What baffled me most was that some perceived the statement as hate speech and that it was insulting that a president listens to news presented in his mother tongue.

I have the utmost conviction that President Buhari himself will only smile to read that he only listens to news in Fulfulde, his Fulani language.

The president reads and it has shown in the calibres of people working as his media aides. Both his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Mr. Femi Adesina and his Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu earned the positions because the president enjoyed their newspapers columns.

So, it is so disappointing that some Nigerians now defend Buhari by judging every write-up from their own fanatical point of view. Former President Obasanjo is being attacked for pointing out what Buhari should do urgently in the area of national security.

Obasanjo has refused to keep quiet and reading his open letter to Buhari, the former president shows a lot of sincerity on why he wants this country fixed by all means.

Having fought the Nigeria civil war and living with the scar, Obasanjo cautioned Buhari against a country on the edge of a precipice. The former president noted that the country is divided along ethnic lines, calling on President Buhari to use his office to address the situation before it gets out of hands.

He spoke about the failure of the present administration to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency, which according to him had since degenerated to banditry and kidnapping.

Debunking the insinuation that all kidnapping cases are being perpetrated by the Fulani herdsmen, Obasanjo advised Buhari to invite any ethnic group, including the Fulanis for a debate to listen to their grievances.

To him, there is no way hate speeches can be curbed when the president himself has not shown enough strength to listen to every ethnic group that has agitation over one issue and another.

He bemoaned the killing of Mrs. Funmi Olakunrin, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the Pan Yoruba socio-political group, adding that such singular murder could lead to serious chaos that could spell doom to the unity of this nation.

He was frank but in a statement by the presidency, the former president was warned against such utterances. A statement signed by Shehu also threatened to arrest any leader who will not guard his tongue over the issue of security in the country.

But to Senator Shehu Sani, there is wisdom in Obasanjo’s letter which Buhari must read.
