Why I Supported Obasanjo’s Third Term Agenda – Ahmadu Ali
The former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Ali has said that the issue of Obasanjo’s third term was never the party’s agenda.
He said this during the launch of his autobiography, adding that such issue was never discussed at the party level and was surprised that it became an issue being debated by the members of the party then.
Ahmadu Ali who was the PDP National Chairman between 2005 and 2007 said that he would have thrown his weight behind Obasanjo’s third term agenda if it was tabled at the PDP’s National Executive Committee meeting.
He said that he would support it because Nigeria needed good leaders at the time and Obasanjo was qualified to reposition the country and make it stronger before another leader could take over.
Ahmadu Ali said that he had the opportunity to become Nigeria’s Ambassador in South Africa at the time but chose to be at home to build the country to an enviable status with such leader as Obasanjo and others.
“I believe Obasanjo is an exemplary leader despite his shortcomings and his third term agenda would have done Nigeria good but it never happened,” Ahmadu Ali said.
He explained that nobody changes a gown when it is not dirty. “Obasanjo, we identified him and wanted him.”
