Why Super Eagles of Nigeria Lost To Argentina – Okocha

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin JJ Okocha has attributed Nigeria’s loss to Argentina at the ongoing world cup in Russia to inexperience.

He said this while analyzing the match on Supersports, adding that a large number of the Super Eagles team are first “comers” to the world cup.

He stated that the Nigeria players gave too much respect to Argentina and were jittery in the first half of the match, which made the Argentine legend, Lionel Messi scored the first goal.

Okocha said that the Super Eagles came out strongly in the second half and were able to win a penalty, which was converted by Victor Moses but failed to mount pressure on Argentina who was desperate to score another goal.

According to Okocha, a draw would have seen Nigeria through but Argentina needed the win and pursued hard to get it towards the end of the match.

The former Bolton Wanderers’ captain noted that the Super Eagles failed because of inexperience, adding, “They must have learnt a bitter lesson”.

He posited that the defeat also came because the centre referee denied the Eagles all the penalties committed by Argentina before Marcos Rojo’s came.

“There were two other penalties not awarded by the referee,” Okocha said.
