Will God Ever Forgive Obasanjo?

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s various statements on Atiku Abubakar.

The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State hosted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a great number of personalities on Thursday.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party was accompanied by the party National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, a Catholic Bishop, Matthew Kukah and a Muslim Cleric, Gumi among other dignitaries.

Also in Atiku’s entourage was the General Overseer of the Faith Tabernacle, aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo. Their mission was to seek Obasanjo’s endorsement of Atiku ahead of the 2019 presidential election.

Before now, Obasanjo had vowed never to give support to Atiku. He went to the extent of swearing that God would never forgive him if he would ever give support to Atiku’s presidential ambition.

However, on Thursday, Obasanjo ate his words. What happened inside the presidential library on Thursday was unlike Obasanjo. And going through the former president’s speech, one could not agree less that human beings would remain the mere mortal until kingdom comes.

Obasanjo addressed Atiku as the president to be, to the amazement of millions of Nigerians. He told Atiku to remember how both ran government together between 1999 and 2007 in which merit and performance dominated the administration instead of blood relationship, friendship and kinship.

Obasanjo, standing between two clerics, embraced Atiku and said that he had forgiven all the sins the former vice president committed against him now that Atiku had retraced his steps and had been revitalized to lead the country out of the current comatose.

As the book of Proverbs 16 vs 7 puts it, when a man’s ways please God, He makes his enemies be at peace with him. Atiku is making more friends, including Obasanjo who never wanted him close to the corridor of power.

But, will God forgive Obasanjo, after everything he had written concerning Atiku, calling him a traitor and corrupt dude. When did Obasanjo begin to see Atiku as a better option than President Muhammadu Buhari whom he endorsed about four years ago in the same Abeokuta?

What does Atiku’s endorsement by Obasanjo portray to Nigerians who have suffered under various presidents that were seemingly imposed on the country? These and many other questions need urgent answers.

It would be recalled that this same Obasanjo tore the PDP membership card sometimes ago, saying he would not participate in politics anymore. He broke his words severally when he joined a group to form Coalition for Nigeria Movement. He went further to play an active role in the formation of a political party, African Democratic Congress, yet he is no more a politician.

And in the last few months, Obasanjo’s residence had played host to political players who sought his endorsement ahead of the coming general election.

Will God forgive Obasanjo? Will Nigeria follow the path of Obasanjo this time, even when it is becoming clearer that almost all the leaders he endorsed in the past failed the country?

Obasanjo endorsed late President Umoru Yar’Adua, former President Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and ensured that each of them received a letter from him, warning them of the impending doom. On Thursday, Obasanjo endorsed Atiku and if his former vice ever gets to the position, he should expect his own letter.
