Will Lagosians Miss Ambode?

By  |

Nigeria News takes a look at Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos and his legacies.

Yes,Lagosians will miss Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his good Jobs and littleerrors in the last four years.

He becomes the first governor of the State that will not win second term ticket not because of his non-performance but due to party politics.

Just like his predecessor, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Ambode fell out with his godfather, the former State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu towards the end of his term.

Unlike Fashola, Governor Ambode failed to manage the crisis. He was booted out by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and replaced by Jide Sanwo-Olu, the governor-elect.

But Ambode will not be forgotten quickly by Lagos residents despite his short rule. There are undeniable successes recorded by this governor that changed the face of Lagos and touched the lives of many.

Of courseTinubu himself confessed that Ambode did well as a governor but he could notreturn him because the party had taken a position that another anointed sonmust come in.

This means that performance alone does not guarantee the re-election of a governor in Lagos and perhaps some other States in Nigeria.

While Lagos electoratemay have got the voting power to choose who leads them, the last scenario ofAmbode has shown that the party and by extension the godfathers have thestrongest power to decide who govern Lagos.

Anyway,Ambode’s effort in building a modern interchange in Oshodi, the reconstructionof Lagos Airport Road, the ongoing bridge and flyover at Pen Cinema, Agege, theJubilee Bridge along Lekki-Ajah corridor are a few of great works that Ambodewould be remembered for.

The variouslaybys that had eased traffic in Lagos and flyovers for pedestrians alongLagos-Ibadan Expressway that had reduced road carnage are testimonials Ambodewould take home after he might have left office come May 29.

Ambodeensured that all pensioners were paid and never owed workers’ salaries for fouryears of his service.

However, looking at the man from outside reflects a conscientious servant but from inside, those who worked with him say Ambode is an emperor. He dictates. He is a bully and a bad listener, so they described him.

Possibly, this may be true, judging by the way he threw out a cleric from the “Christ The Light Church”, an Anglican communion under the control of the State government at CBD, Alausa.

It was gathered that the clergyman was rude to Governor’s wife, Mrs Bolanle Ambode during a Holy Communion service.

The governorin his anger had ordered the clergy to vacate the church premises within 24hours. The pastor’s belongings and his children were thrown out despite theintervention of the leadership of the Anglican Church.

Yes, Ambodewill be missed by this singular action too. Also, the unguarded statement ofAmbode, calling Jide Sanwo-Olu a psychiatric patient who is not fit to begovernor during the APC governorship primary in Lagos will be remembered.

TheGovernor-elect may have forgiven Ambode, he can never forget being called aformer Psycho.
