Will Secondus Be Ready To Rob Makarfi’s Back?

Nigeria News - Will Secondus Be Ready To Rob Makarfi’s Back

Nigeria News takes a look at the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential aspirants and the role of the National Chairman of the party Uche Secondus.

This is the payback time for the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus as some prominent members of the party are signifying their presidential ambition.

Against all odds, Secondus was elected as the party national chairman with the strong backing of the former Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

It was obvious then that Makarfi had a presidential ambition for him to have tactically thrown his weight behind Secondus who had emerged among many other aspirants from the southwest region.

The party actually zoned the national chairmanship to the southwest but having seen the handwriting that PDP had no weight in the region, Makarfi wisely queued behind a southern candidate.

And with the financial power coming from the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, all the aspirants in the southwest were beaten to the race. They protested after Secondus emerged but the game was over.

The PDP has its stronghold in the east and south-south Nigeria. This is the strength Makarfi had seen and that was why he ensured Secondus won the national chairmanship seat.

Before then, the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had defected from the All Progressives Congress over alleged alienation of his cronies by the Federal Government.

He moved to PDP with the ambition to run for the presidency, which he had since officially declared. Atiku has been strategizing and consulting within the party. He actually created PDP alongside other politicians in 1998 but he is more or less a stranger in the party now due to the personal ambition that has been drifting him around different political platforms.

Today, Atiku does not have a firm grip of the PDP and this may cause him another miscarriage as 2019 presidential poll draws closer.

No doubt, Atiku would be ready to singlehandedly bankroll his emergence as the PDP candidate but he is steadily losing his charm. To many of his adversaries and even allies, Atiku looks desperate to rule Nigeria and it is dangerous.

On Sunday, Makrfi, a former two-term Governor of Kaduna State, former two-term senator of the Federal Republic declared his intention to run for the presidential position.

At a news conference, he addressed in Kaduna, Makarfi said that he had consulted widely and found out that he is most acceptable for that position among party members.

Makarfi said that he would be picking his nomination form soon and would soon flag off the campaign mercenaries that will see him as the PDP candidate at the forthcoming national congress.

Will Secondus be ready to give his support to Makarfi who brought him to seat? This may sound rhetorical, it is a question that needs a good answer because it will not only direct how the funding will go, it is expected to show where the loyalty lies.

All eyes are on Atiku and of course his Director of Campaign Organisation, the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. How will they play the game when the referee and their opponents are friends?
