World Awaits Next Liberia President As George Weah Camp Claims Victory
As the world awaits the results of Liberia’s 26th Dec presidential run-off vote, Ghana’s former President and Head of ECOWAS Observation Mission John Mahama met in Monrovia Wednesday with heads of other International observer groups to review the electoral process.
Their preliminary assessment is that balloting took place relatively smoothly and peacefully across the country, with all the potential for a credible outcome. They also noted improvements compared to the first round of 10th October.
Meanwhile, the National Elections Commission NEC, Liberia has urged the citizens to ignore all results that did not emanate from it. Its Chairman Jerome Korkoya said counting & tallying of results were continuing at the National Collation Centres while the release of provisional results would start later and the final results within the next 72 hours.
At the observers’ review meeting were also representatives of African Union, European Union, Carter Center, US National Democratic Institute, whose team is co-led by Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan, and the Electoral Institute Sustainable Democracy in Africa, EISA.
However, there are indications that the former footballer and Liberia International George Weah is leading so far in the votes counted.
His camp has been jubilating and claiming the victory even though the final results have not been announced.
